Crime Makes an Entrance ~ A Love Under the Sun Romantic Suspense by Dellani Oakes Part 40

“I’m sorry about that, Mr. Stewart. That’s exactly why I called you first. What do you think about me coming by and talking to her personally?”

“Probably better, but I can’t guarantee she won’t get hysterical or something. I’m not prepared to deal with that.”

“No problem, I can bring someone with me who is. I need to speak to you both further, in any case. I’ll call her now, and set something up at the house, shall I?”

“Yes, maybe afterwards, she’ll speak to me again.”

“Better I tell her than you, Mr. Stewart.”

“Name’s Deacon, and hell yeah! Later.”

He hung up. As he walked back into the bank, Kacy strutted out, her phone ringing. Sandy saw her go out and Deacon come in. He had finished signing his papers as Kacy walked back in the office, looking smug.

“Detective Reyes called. He’ll be dropping by the house after lunch, around one thirty.”

“To see us?”

“To see me.” She turned her shoulder on him, signed her papers and they left together.

“Maybe he’ll tell you more than he did me.”

“Oh, I guarantee. I intend to ask plenty of questions. Unlike you, I believe in taking initiative in a conversation.” She said no more all the way home.

Deacon unlocked the door and heard the phone ringing inside. Running to the phone, he nearly tripped over the coffee table again, but avoided a collision with a neat dodge to the left. A glace at the caller ID left him in the dark, one of those unknown name, unknown number things.

“Hello,” he gasped, his voice sounding strange, even to his own ears.

A cultured woman’s voice replied hesitantly. “Um, I may have the wrong number. I’m trying to reach Hillary Du Champs?”

“Oh, sure. One second.” He held up the phone to Kacy. “It’s for you.”

She took the phone absently without really looking at him, puzzlement in her eyes. “Yes? Oh, hi, Mom!” She didn’t look or sound happy to hear the voice on the other end.

“That is the technical director of the theater, Deacon. Yes, yes he does have a very nice voice.”

She sat down on the couch, curled up against the cushions in a defensive position. Deacon went and made coffee, set it on a tray and brought it out to her so she could doctor it herself. She did so distractedly, putting in more sugar than usual.

“Well, I suppose you might be able to do that. I can check with Dino and see if you can stay here at the guest house. No, no it won’t be any bother. I’m sure we can make arrangements to come get you. Just let me know when the flight is coming in. Okay, love to Pop. Bye.” She hung up looking flustered and bewildered.

“That was Pete’s mum. They want to come visit.” She sounded and looked completely despondent.

“Sounds like a nice idea.”

“No, you don’t understand. The court case, getting Pete off the equipment, they opposed it. I don’t know if they will ever really forgive me. It was very traumatic for all of us. I don’t know if I want to see them just now. And, well….”

“There’s us to explain.”

“Yes, there’s us. Oh, Deacon, I’m being such a nasty bitch again. I’m so sorry! I know you have your reasons for not telling me what Reyes said, but it makes me feel so helpless! Can you forgive me, again?”

Deacon took her gently in his arms, kissing her hair. “Kacy, I will forgive you as many times as you ask me. I’ll forgive you even when you don’t ask. We’ll get through this together.”

“They’re very rich and proper. Nice people, don’t get me wrong, but used to having their way. I never got the impression they ever thought me good enough for him.” She stopped, looking at her hands. “I’m babbling like an idiot. His mum has that effect on me.”

“I’m here for you, Kacy. No matter what, I’m here.”

“She’s not going to like us being in the same room, you know. Pete and I lived together for a year before we were married. She refused to visit us until he made an honest woman of me, her words, not mine.”

“There are three bedrooms plus the study to choose from. We give them the master suite, you take your old room and I’ll go in the little one down the hall. If we have to, we’ll sneak off to my room for a little private time. It’s on the other end of the house, they won’t ever know. As long as you don’t scream or anything.” He nudged her and winked. She had a tendency to get rather vocal during sex.

Giggling, she blushed deeply. “You are something else, you know that?”

He chuckled, remembering their earlier conversation. “What am I, then?” He imitated her accent and intonation perfectly.

“Oh, bugger you!” Laughing, she hit him with a pillow.

Deacon hopped up and ran across the room. Kacy chased him, but he made a grab at her, lifting her up, tickling her.

“Give up?”

Kacy gasped for breath, shaking her head. “No, never!”
