The Between Times by Marta Moran Bishop

I’m proud to  host Marta Moran Bishop who invited me to join THE NEXT BIG THING. Next week, I’ll be sharing about my novel. But today, it’s all Marta!

I’ve joined THE NEXT BIG THING, thanks to Ben Woodward, who invited me. He’s the author A Stairway To Danger.

Ben was invited by C. Lee McKenzie super blogger. She’s the author of a new middle grade book Alligators Overhead. http://writegame.blogspot.com/2012/09/the-next-big-thing.html

I’m supposed to answer some questions. Here goes.

WHAT IS THE WORKING TITLE OF YOUR BOOK?

The Between Times

WHERE DID THE IDEA COME FROM FOR THE BOOK?

The idea for using what I call The Between Times came to me early in the morning, at the time between night and dawn when the sky is just beginning to lighten, but dawn has not yet broken.

The idea for the rest of the book was based on the current political arena and what I envisioned the country would be like if some of these things happened.

WHAT GENRE DOES YOUR BOOK FALL UNDER?

It falls under future society, paranormal, magic, fantasy.

WHICH ACTORS WOULD YOU CHOOSE TO PLAY YOUR CHARACTERS IN A MOVIE RENDITION?

I would like to see Jewell played by Rhyon Nicole Brown. Benjamin played by Denzel Washington, Ana played by Helen Mirren, Jamie played by Orlando Bloom, and Carlos by Joaquin Phoenix

WHAT IS THE ONE-SENTENCE SYNOPSIS OF YOUR BOOK?

What if for the first time in the history of the United States we took a social and economic nose dive into oblivion?

WILL YOUR BOOK BE SELF-PUBLISHED OR REPRESENTED BY AN AGENCY?

I self-published, after a stint with a publisher, I like the freedom to write what I want and to make my own marketing choices.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO WRITE THE FIRST DRAFT OF YOUR MANUSCRIPT?

The first draft went fairly fast in about six weeks. From there it was the rewrite. Then I added the dialogue and filled out the story.

WHAT OTHER BOOKS WOULD YOU COMPARE THIS STORY TO WITHIN YOUR GENRE?

It has been compared to Orwell’s 1984 and Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THIS BOOK?

I find the time of day I call the between times to hold a special sort of magic for me. I meditate easier and feel more connected to life. I also have noticed how divided we have become as a country and how the span between rich and poor seems to grow each year.

WHAT ELSE ABOUT YOUR BOOK MIGHT PIQUE THE READER’S INTEREST?

Sammy Sutton, author of King Solomon’s Journey, Hidden Mountain, and Darkening Danger, put it best. Imagine if modern day Chicago fades into an evil darkness separated by a wall. A separateness ruled by the upper society that isolates and mistreats the poor. These less fortunate people, in a short amount of time find themselves forced to live in the lower communities suffering from mistreatment comparable only to the concentration camps during WWII. Women are no longer human beings, but are nothing more than breeding animals kept only to prevent extinction of the race. The conditions are bleak and seemingly hopeless.

It is the belief in a Legend that becomes the driving force behind the survival. A young girl named Jewel, living in the captivity of this devastating socioeconomic environment, is the dream. She manifests hope and magic from within this beautiful tale.

I’ve tagged these writers to be the Next Great Thing. Be sure to go their links and say hi. Next Wednesday, October 17, they will be answering the questions.
